Google Maps’ Privacy Boost
Enhanced Control for Users
Google Maps is getting an update to boost your privacy. Here’s what’s changing:
Table of Contents
Activity Collection
Now, your recent activity is gathered in one spot. Your recent activity is conveniently consolidated into a single location. This allows you to review the locations you have visited, including the corresponding dates and duration. Moreover, you have the ability to effortlessly remove any searches, directions, or shares, all from one central location. Plus, you can easily delete searches, directions, and shares all in one place.
Data Deletion
You have the power to delete each entry individually or wipe the entire history. A notification will pop up, showing what’s about to be removed. This includes photos, reviews, feedback reports, and more related to a location.
Location Settings
Tapping the blue dot on Google Maps opens a menu. Here, you can manage settings for Timeline and Location History. Check if these features are on and control the app’s access to your device’s location. This update is rolling out to Android and iOS phones in the coming weeks.
Save Your Timeline
Next year, an additional feature lets you save your Timeline recording directly to your device, not just on Google’s cloud. You can delete parts or all your info if you prefer no trace. Encryption ensures your data is secure, whether on your device or Google’s servers.
Location History Tweak
Location History’s auto-delete default is now three months, down from 18. After this period, all saved info gets deleted. You can switch back to the longer duration whenever you want.
Timeline Notifications
While the exact date of the 2024 Android and iOS Timeline changes is unknown, Google promises to notify you when it happens.
